The story…

Why did I paint this painting? On our recent Safari holiday, every dawn and dusk, we were blown away by the sheer abundance of animals, much fatted by the recent rains, calmly going about their business, and seemingly unaware of the revving land rovers and hushed voices.  We saw so so many wonderful animal – lions, elephants, hyenas, hippos… but what eluded us was the rhino. On the last day of the stay my husband caught some bug so we decided we would not go on the final dawn run.

However, the children (when I say children, they were in their late teens) were determined to go by themselves.  With the Masai driver, of course. Three hours later they came back utterly jubilant, breathless, their eyes on fire.  They saw a magnificent rhino.  Then they saw the smaller calf behind her.  How lucky was that?  Such a memorable holiday!
